Abstract:
The aromatic medicinals depot was an imperial storage institution established in the early Song Dynasty for the preservation of aromatic medicines and spices gathered at the court through channels such as tribute missions, maritime trade (shibo trade), and local tribute offerings. Against the historical backdrop of the depot releasing aromatic medicines to the civilian population due to inventory pressure, this study systematically examines the role of these circulated aromatic medicines in promoting the development of folk aromatic medicine culture during the Northern and Southern Song dynasties across three dimensions: medical application, social life, and cultural representation. The results indicate that precious aromatic medicines such as frankincense and Dalbergia odorifera (jiangzhenxiang) were widely applied in clinical practice; aromatic medicinal products including scented teas, medicated wines, incense seals (xiangyin), aromatic beads (xiangzhu), and fumigation incense significantly enriched the social life of the common populace; and the proliferation of incense-related texts (xiangpu) provided crucial documentary evidence for the study of aromatic medicine culture in the Song Dynasty. These findings reveal the pivotal role played by the imperial aromatic medicine depository in facilitating the dissemination of aromatic medicine culture among the civilian population.
